Konowalchuk Retires; Tests Find Risk of Irregular Heart Rhythms
DENVER (AP) -Colorado Avalanche forward Steve Konowalchuk retired Friday after tests showed he has Long QT Syndrome, a genetic disease that can lead to irregular heart rhythms.
"After a complete evaluation from a number of different physicians and experts associated with this condition, we decided that this was the best and only alternative for me," Konowalchuk said.
Konowalchuk, 33, had 171 goals and 225 assists in 790 games over 13 seasons. He had 52 playoff appearances, with nine goals and 12 assists.
He was drafted by the Washington Capitals in 1991 and acquired by the Avalanche in 2003.

Avalanche LW Konawalchuk may have heart abnormality
September 15, 2006 ENGLEWOOD, Colorado (Ticker) - Steve Konowalchuk of the Colorado Avalanche could not join his teammates for the start of training camp.
The team announced on Friday that an EKG revealed that the veteran left wing may have a heart problem.
"Results from standard EKG testing done yesterday (Thursday) revealed an abnormality and further examination is required at this time to determine the exact nature of his condition," Avalanche trainer Matt Sokolowski said.
Further information will be announced after more medical tests are conducted.
Konawalchuk, 33, missed the final 61 games and the playoffs last season with a wrist injury. He had six goals and nine assists in 21 games.
The 6-1, 205-pound Konawalchuk spent his first 12 seasons with the Washington Capitals before being acquired by Colorado in October 2003. He recorded 19 goals and 20 assists in his first season with the Avalanche.
The 2004-05 season was canceled by a player lockout.
A third-round pick in 1991, Konawalchuk has 171 goals and 225 assists in 790 NHL games.

Flames obtain Tanguay from Colorado |
VANCOUVER -- The Calgary Flames, eager to boost their offense, obtained foward Alex Tanguay from the Colorado Avalanche for defenseman Jordan Leopold on Saturday. The Avalanche also received Calgary's 2006 second round pick and a conditional second round pick for either 2007 or 2008.
Tanguay scored 78 points on 29 goals in 71 games for Colorado last season. He joined the Avs for the 1999-2000 season and has scored 400 points in 450 NHL games.
Leopold is a rock-solid defenseman who's represented the United States on the international level. Leopold notched 20 points in 74 games for Calgary this past season, his third in the NHL.

So...after we won last night, I was wondering how much Neil Smith's back hurt from carrying all that water for Dallas?
That Modano goal with three seconds left in the second was kicked in. I saw the replays---I'd bet my left nut.

Aebi was named the NHL Defensive Player of the week (along with the Pen's netminder).
To all of you who said he was terrible this season, or believed the media hype about him not being in top form... well, hope your ankles are taped up so you can hop back on the bandwagon, my friends.

Penny pinching Report: Avalanche decline options on Sakic, Blake DENVER (Ticker) -- The suddenly cost-conscious Colorado Avalanche apparently have taken another step toward cutting corners.
According to a report by the Denver Post on Thursday, the Avalanche have declined to exercise the 2006-07 contract options of center Joe Sakic and defenseman Rob Blake.
Due to the NHL's new $39 million salary cap, Colorado was unable to retain superstar Peter Forsberg and defenseman Adam Foote during the summer.
In not picking up the options on Sakic and Blake, who signed five-year deals with options for a sixth season, the Avalanche reportedly will save close to $700,000 this campaign as team payroll figures are based on the combined average of the length of a player's contract.
Sakic is scheduled to make $6,664,797 this season, while Blake will receive $6,364,112. Had their options been exercised, each would have made close to $7 million in 2006-07.
Both players will be eligible to become unrestricted free agents on July 1. Sakic, the team captain, has been with the franchise since being drafted 15th overall by Quebec in 1987.

it was no offense to any of you guys, i respect any AVs fan the same. my apologies again and even worse, i feel the pain of forsberg gone. this is terrible.
can you imagine, we're actually going to be playing against forsberg now? i don't know how to swallow this yet.
